Journal post n.4: Mouse in the House
19/7/22 - written by Laly Bigeard
Hey guys welcome to my 4th journal post, today’s journal post is about mice and at first it is sort of gross, anyway enjoy and don’t miss part two!
PART ONE:
This whole story starts with Laly getting ready for bed. She’s reading in bed enjoying her book until she hears her bunny thumping his foot and carrying on in his hutch. Her parents go out to the lounge room to see if he’s okay and Laly follows to give her bunny a cuddle. Her mum moves stuff around inside the bunny’s two story hutch. She moves about the ramp and out jumps a mouse! Laly’s mum starts screaming and Laly starts freaking out, while her dad is trying to calm both of them down. They all get a good look at it hiding behind a basket and it is actually really cute. Laly’s parents think it is a native mouse. Laly’s mum opens up the front door to see if the mouse will run out. It doesn’t work so everyone decides to go to bed and check in the morning.
We can’t find the mouse in the morning but mum heard it rummaging around in the pantry in the night! So Laly’s parents decide to order a humane mouse trap. Laly had just started an animal club and didn’t want the mouse to get killed so her parents decided to order a trap that wouldn’t kill it but would allow them to release the mouse back into the wild. Her dad picks up the trap two days later and puts food in it to lure the mouse in. Everyone is checking the trap constantly to check if the mouse is inside. It’s right near the rabbit’s hutch and since nothing is working they move the trap inside the pantry considering the family has had to chuck over $100 worth of food, since there has been holes in packets and nibbled chips and crackers.
A couple of days later when Laly has finished her lunch outside on the patio with her parents she walks inside the pantry and checks the trap. She sees something moving and a long skinny tail sticking out and realises it’s the mouse! She runs out to tell her parents and shouts “we’ve caught the mouse!”. Everyone is so happy about it and so glad that the mouse is inside the trap and can be released out of the house. Only Laly’s mum doesn’t check for the mouse, she decides to finish her lunch. While Laly’s parents are outside chatting and eating, curious Laly goes back in the pantry to check if the mouse is alive or at least moving. She then looks around the trap and sees a strange red chip next to the mouse’s tail… but then the chip starts moving and Laly freaks out thinking that this chip is actually alive. Then, she looks closer to find that it is a new born mouse and that this mouse has just had babies!
She rushes outside and tells her parents about the news. Her mum is shocked and only waits until she has finished her lunch to hear more about it. There are four babies that are newborns, lying on their sides with little paws and eyes and are the size of a very tiny piece of mandarin. I was a bit grossed out at first but afterwards thought that the babies were kind of cute. Some were moving and some were not and if you ask me they looked like they were dead. It’s a terrible thought to think that there are baby mice living in your house also looking like they are dead! My whole family looks at the mother mouse, her face looking sad but super cute. We all decided to carry the trap in a basket and walk down to the lake to release these family of mice. This is how I grew a fear of mice and chips and never wanted to eat a chip ever again.
(Stay tuned for part two of the mouse story)
